Our Story

The Middle Earth Tiles story began over 40 years ago with the opening of the Heritage Terracotta Tile manufacturing plant in Warkworth. For decades, we crafted beautiful terracotta and hand-glazed tiles right here in New Zealand.

We’ve also been importing hand-glazed tiles from our artisan partners in Thailand for over 20 years, and these tiles have featured in many of our most highly regarded projects.

In 2022, following a post-COVID review, we ceased terracotta manufacturing in Warkworth and added importing a full range of Terracotta Tiles from a single supplier in Thailand through our existing partners.

Hand-glazing operations continued in Warkworth until early 2026, when we closed our factory to focus entirely on our curated importing model.

This wasn’t a knee-jerk reaction—it was a carefully managed transition that allows us to leverage decades of successful partnerships whilst delivering the expert service our clients expect.

Our tiles are still lovingly hand-glazed, our terracotta is still made using time-honoured methods, and every piece reflects our core values: ecological responsibility, artisan quality, and designs that delight.

Built for New Zealand Conditions

Our TerraKlinker range from Spain features some of the most durable tiles available, engineered to withstand New Zealand’s demanding climate—from coastal salt spray to alpine frosts. These frost-proof tiles combine European precision with the resilience our conditions require.

Today, we operate from three sites around Matakana near Warkworth, offering appointment-based consultations where we guide you through our carefully curated collections.
